I keep getting this error message, but I do have the child theme installed.  What can I do?

You just need to activate the child theme.

But that changes the site so that there is none of the customizations that I made.  The logo for the header is gone, the background is just solid white, etc.

Theme settings are saved in the database and are associated with the theme.

I’ve written a simple function that will copy your parent theme settings to your child theme:
https://gist.github.com/simplethemes/7329f5d5750e7258ee39

• Activate the child theme.
• Paste the above code at the bottom your child theme functions.php (via FTP or Appearance → Editor → functions.php)
• Go to the homepage of your website and reload the page to run the function.

You should see then your changes take effect on the front end.

Note: Any changes you may have made to theme images or CSS files should be copied to the child theme as well.

For example, if you edited style1.css you’ll want to copy:
wp-content/themes/element/style1.css to wp-content/themes/element-child/style1.css
